We had 91 mothers with over 300 kids show up today for lunch and milk distribution. One would think it would be complete chaos with that many small children trying to get away from their mothers. Actually, aside from an unplanned trip to Godinez to buy more bowls and forks, it went quite smoothly. One thing must be said about Guatemalans; they are polite and behaved. Even the small kids just sit with their mothers and wait patiently for their food.
We are actually planning to increase the numbers as we begin the new year. We will be including a new community we discovered fairly nearby called Chuiti Estancia and they are among the poorest Guatemalans we have seen yet. Most everyone subsists by farming very small plots to try and feed their families. It is a real treat to have them here because most of them rarely eat anything but corn every day. Today our wonderful cook prepared a large vegetable and chicken pasta.
These people so rarely get meat or any other protein source that this once weekly opportunity is well attended as you can see. Many of them must travel more than an hour to get here but to provide their child with some nourishing food is well worth the journey. Our elementary school kids start again on the 14th and we look forward to seeing them back with us then.
