In Guatemala, when it rains, it really pours. This is the end of the monsoon season here in Guatemala and it is definitely going out with a bang. Over the last 3 days it has rained incessantly. There is always a consequence; mudslides. And we are now completely cut off from everywhere. The roads on all sides have been blocked by falling mountains.
It can rain several inches in an hour here and the land simply can't absorb it. So, the road to Pana, where all food and other items come from, is closed. The interesting thing is, no one ever knows how long this condition might exist.
Guatemala is not a land of abundant heavy equipment. Mostly, men with shovels clear roads when they can. We are grateful for our stockpile of rice and beans. All of a sudden it sounds more appetizing.
But as with all things, there is always a silver lining. Our group or World Race volunteers has arrived. It has taken them two days to get here from Antigua due to road conditions but they finally made it. They are very resourceful as they goaded the van driver through several areas he did not want to pass. They promised to get out and push if he got stuck. That's my kind of volunteer. They are here and ready to work. We are excited to have them and look forward to their help.
