This week the foundation owners are in Guatemala for a short visit and as you might expect, everyone is excited to spend a little time with them. This morning Vicki decided to make a visit to the local elementary school to share a few treats with all the kids. These are the same kids that participate in our program at Casa de Sion each day as they finish classes at the public school. We got them all in the big classroom and taught them a few English words and had a nice visit with them all.

After a few introductory words from Vicki, the foundation owner (with your's truly translating), they lined up very respectfully to get a package of cookies and a glass of horchata, a rice drink. The kids really are well behaved and sweet here, so sharing a treat with them was most appropriate.

The school kitchen is not quite as modern as those you might find in US elementary schools but it keeps you warm and makes a big pot of atoll (a sort of corn drink) for all the kids. The kids all said "Thank You" in unison after receiving their cooks and horchata (in English). It is such fun working with kids who recognize the little pleasures in life because they have so little of their own. A simple cookie and drink are so special. I sometimes think when the scriptures say we must become as a child, they might have been referring more the Guatemalan kids than ... well, they really are special.
